Why the Name?

The text "Why the Name?" appears over a background of green plants.

If you aren’t familiar with the word verdant, here’s how Merriam-Webster defines it:

verdant (adjective)

1 a: green in tint or color

b: green with growing plants

So, why did I choose to name my business Verdant Editorial?

Well, it certainly doesn’t hurt that green has always been my favorite color. Or that houseplants are my go-to for home decor.

Beyond that, verdant encapsulates the outcome I envision for my clients: a final product that is as healthy and vibrant as a thriving plant. This shapes how I think about what editing is (it’s is a lot like caring for plants) and my approach to it (helping writers grow their work).

Editing is a Lot Like Caring for Plants

Whether you’re tending decorative indoor plants or growing your own food in your backyard, your plants need cultivation to thrive. They need weeding, watering, tending, and pruning. Our words need cultivation as well. They need perfecting, polishing, revising, and trimming. Just like a master gardener can help you grow healthy plants, an editor can help you write compelling content. As an editor, I help authors trim the plants (refine structure), tend the soil (smooth out awkward sentences), and pull the weeds (fix spelling and grammatical errors) so their writing can be more effective.

Editing Helps Writers Grow Their Work

Good writers are always looking to improve their craft, but they need good feedback in order to do that. That’s hard to find. Most friends and family will tell you your writing is amazing without offering any real suggestions for improvement. Critics will tell you that your work is unsalvageable, so you may as well scrap it. Agents and publishers will reject your manuscript without giving you any feedback at all.

As your editor, I will help you grow as a writing by giving you the honest feedback you need. I won’t offer empty praise. I will give you specific insights into what you’re doing well. I won’t crush your confidence with harsh criticism. I will give you straightforward guidance on what can be improved.
